Die Burg wurde vermutlich in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts erbaut. 1160 wird sie unter den Namen Rotenstein als bambergischer Besitz genannt. Gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts war sie eines der Rodungszentren der Grafen von Clam-Velburg. Ihre erste urkundliche Erwähnung erfolgte im Jahr 1209.
