Après une longue montée dans le vallon de la Selle, on atteint le refuge installé sur un promontoire face au glacier de la Selle et au pied du Râteau. On peut contempler les hauts sommets qui dominent le refuge, Tête du Replat (3442m), Pic de la Grave (3567m), Aiguille du Plat de la Selle (3596m).
